Eligible Members
All members of the Johns Hopkins community are eligible to join. Only undergraduate members are eligible for IHSA competition. Participation in IHSA is encouraged, but not mandatory. The only requirements are an interest in the sport, and commitment to the team!
Scheduling
The Johns Hopkins Equestrian Team creates a riding schedule at the beginning of each semester. The Team works to ensure that ride times fit the level of each rider and their academic schedule as best as possible. Lesson groups consist of three or more riders. Each rider rides a minimum of once a week, though riding more is always encouraged!
Transportation
Transportation is provided through the university. Members with valid driver's licenses can get van certified, and will be able to drive to and from the barn, which allows non-driving members an opportunity to ride. Occasionally, when vans are not available, Zipcars can be used.
It's not just about riding!
Because part of the mission of the Equestrian Team is to provide horse management education, riders are responsible for the care of their horse before and after lessons. Asking questions is encouraged, and there won't be a test!
Cost
Members cover the cost of their lessons, plus a small membership fee. Members are also responsible for providing their own safe barn attire and an ASTM/SEI approved helmet. Team members will help provide transportation to local tack stores, and are more than happy to help you pick a safe helmet. While the riding facilities provide helmets that can be borrowed for the first two weeks of riding, the safest helmet is one that fits you. Just check out any of the number of Hopkins research studies to see the data!
